PrintRadar on December 4, 2009

It seems like PrintRadar is all about series these days. And yet, we are starting one more today. And guess what? It will be about designer tools and some killer quick tool tips on making your work stand out. We will also try to make your work and life easier at the same time. In order to start this series the easy way, we’ve chosen one really quick tip. We’re gonna show you how to give your holiday, or any other photos, a blurred make up.

Step 1 – Open up the photo in Photoshop.

Step 2 – Duplicate photo layer and place it on top. Change blending mode to Overlay.

Step 3 – Select top layer, go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur, and set the radius to about 4 pixels. And please note that while we used 4 pixels, that value might not work for your photo. Experiment and play with different sizes until you figure it out.

Step 3 - Apply Gaussian Blur

Done! Quick, easy, and neat. The blur makes the lighter spots even more lighter, and dark spots even more darker. You can also try various blending modes and play with it a bit. Finished photo looks more colorful than the original one.

I love this effect and use it quite often on portraits as it gives a little extra punch. It works really great with skin tones along with a little erasing here and there.
