Cymbolism – A Great Place Where Words Meet Colors

PrintRadar on November 12, 2009

Long time ago scientists have discovered that colors affect human feelings, mood and behavior and that some people are affected more than others. Today we have something called Color Psychology and large number of scientist, laboratories, theories, and experiments which are all trying to determine what is actually going on in our brains. Well we can think about Cymbolism as one of those experiments which is strictly focused on relationship between words and colors.

What color would you choose if we said Print right now? Well that word is still missing from their database but we can tell you that if we said Peace for instance, most people would choose white color. Why is white color usually connected to that particular word? Sure lots of people will say it is because of the white flag, which is quite often connected to it, but we think there is something more to it  than meets the eye.

Many people are playing with color combinations these days in order to produce a certain effect and induce autosuggestion. From that group we can point out advertisers who are manipulating colors in order to influence people to buy their products and that will ultimately lead us to designers who actually need to make those color combinations. That’s where Cymbolism can help you out.

A great place where words meet colors

Cymbolism is a website which is actually trying to quantify associations between words and colors. That is great news for designers because now they can easily associate campaign slogans with colors in order to produce maximal effect. And not only that. Packaging, books, magazines, and other areas of designer work can also incorporate this approach in order to produce a certain feeling in people. And we have just scratched the surface. Who said living space?

So what is the procedure? Cymbolism works this way. People go to website, see a certain word and then click on a color they thought right away. Simple as that. As more people choose the certain color, more connections are made and a dominant color for one particular word is found. People can also suggest words that they need to be color coded and other people will try to do it over time. That’s basically all there is to do on Cymbolism but it is a very interesting idea and a concept that seems to do the trick so far.
